THE MULTIPURPOSE USAGE OF TONGUES

TONUES IS USED PRIVATELY TO GOD IN PRAYER

1 Corinthians 14:2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit.

Romans 8:26-7 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

1 Corinthians 14:4 Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church.

1 Corinthians 2:13 Of these we speak--not in language which man's wisdom teaches us, but in that which the Spirit teaches--adapting, as we do, spiritual words to spiritual truths.

TONUES IS PUBLICLY USED IN THE CONGREGATION

1 Corinthians 14:6 Now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?

1 Corinthians 14:13For this reason the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that they may interpret what they say.

1 Corinthians 14:39 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.

TONGUES IS USED BOTH PUBLICLY AND PRIVATLEY

1 Corinthians 14:27- 28 If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and to God.

TONGUES IS FOR UNBELIEVERS

1 Corinthians 14:22 Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers;..

TONGUES IS FOR BELIEVERS

1 Corinthians 14:5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues,

1 Corinthians 14:26 ...When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up.

AT TIMES TONGUES CAN CHANGE

1 Corinthians 14:5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified.

TONGUES IS FOR EVERYONE

1 Corinthians 14:5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues,

TONGUES IS NOT FOR EVERYONE

1 Corinthians 12:10-11 to another (is given) miraculous powers, to another prophecy... to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one individually as He wills.

NO ONE UNDERSTANDS

1 Corinthians 14:2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit

1 Corinthians 14:14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.

OTHER NATIONS UNDERSTAND

Acts 2:6-8 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?

THERE ARE DIFFERENT KINDS OF TONGUES

1 Corinthians 12:10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.
