DISTINCT DIFFERENCES FOR THE BAPTISMS |
The Bible Mentions More Than 1 Baptism |
Heb 6:1-3 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. And this will we do, if God permit. John the baptist said in Mat 3:11 “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize (no question here) you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire!” John the baptist also said in John 1:31-33 (NIV) “I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.” Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit” (Good indication Jesus was actually baptized of the Holy Spritit Himself). |
Clear Time Difference Between Baptisms |
Act 18:24-26 Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, competent in the Scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord. And being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately. Act 19:1-6 (ESV) And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when (past tense, KJV also uses past tense since) you believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John's baptism.” And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.” On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying. Act 8:12,14-17(ESV) But when they believed Philip as he preached good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women... Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, for he had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit. |
Time Differences Between the Apostles Baptism |
Luk 24:45, 49 Then he (Jesus) opened their minds to understand the Scriptures (must have been saved if they could understand the scriptures)... And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” Act 1:4-5 (ESV) And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now. John the apostle also mentions a time difference when Jesus breathed and they received the Holy Ghost prior to going to the upper room and waiting on the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. John 20:22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: |
Jesus Himself received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit With Power |
Mat 3:16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him (if Jesus needed this baptism even as God and sinless, we need it to). Act 10:38 ...God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power... Reference: Mk 1:10, Lk 3:22, John 1:32 |
Theologians erroneous substitution of a noun for an adjective has led to doctrinal contradictions |
Eph 4:4-6 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. One is a noun above not an adjective. Examples of nouns: Grand Canyon, One Nation under God. Examples of an adjective: one, two, or three dollars. One spirit above is the same concept (1Corth 12:4 diversity of gifts, same spirit...). |
Personal Note |
Christians who have received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit have said it was separate from their baptism of salvation by being born again (asking Jesus into their hearts, confession of sins, and believing Christ is God and Savior). Much time seemed wasted (30 years) just because I thought they were two of the same. With the Baptism of the Holy Spirit there is an extra anointing of Gods love by those who have received this provision. As mentioned earlier Jesus received this baptism of the Holy Spirit with power. I simply could not share what I did not have without this baptism. There is a greater capacity to share Gods love in this powerful anointing. |
Why Two Baptisms? |
It appears we move on from some aspects of the first baptism to the second. Hebrews 6:1-3 BLB Therefore, having left the beginning teaching of the Christ, we should go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works, and faith in God... and of the resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. And this will we do if God permits. Here is where we “go on to”: Hebrews 10:19 MKJV Therefore, brothers, having boldness to enter into the Holy of Holies by the blood of Jesus. We receive God's goodness and love as sons/daughters to serve others by who we are in Christ. |
